La Romieu is a small town situated in the north of the Gers, in Gascony.
It was in 1082, returning from a pilgrimage to Rome, that two German monks decided to stop and create a sauveté in these places. In the XIV century, Arnaud d'Aux Lescout built in his village a beautiful collegiate church for him and his family (private church). In the XIV century, La Romieu became a bastide and its arcaded square is today decorated with many stone cats , placed on the windows of homes, telling the legend of Angeline and her cats.
- The church of Saint-Pierre La Romieu (cloisters, towers) is now listed Historical Monument and World Heritage of Humanity by UNECO. His wonderful cloister, its single nave church, and its two towers are now a jewel in the merveillous heritage of the Gers. One of the two towers contains also an architectural treasure: a double staircase. It is today open to visitors all year.
- In the town, you can also find a great private botanical garden open to visitors, the gardens of Coursiana. This park has four gardens: an arboretum of 700 species, an English garden, a garden of medicinal plants, aromatics and parfum and a vegetable garden.
- At last, the village also offers many marvels. Its arcaded square, the Gothic fountain and Lavoir, many private churches ( private property), and the ruins of the palace of Cardinal are now houses. Fortified village, there is now very many traces of its old configuration (North Gate, foothills, ...)
